Very interesting to get your perspective on the experience.

It was also interesting to read that the protester from the 60s who was on the jury with you disparaged the defendants' attempt to avoid the penalty by claiming ignorance of the law. Aside from the fact that "ignorance of the law is no excuse," it is a fascinating insight into modern political protest to see defendants arrested for activism try to avoid the law.

The essence of civil disobedience (see Ghandi and King) is to accept the martyrdom of jail precisely to prove how bad the laws are. Someone who protests without accepting the consequences is not advancing the cause. If you genuinely believe in the righteousness of what you're doing, the best way to do it is to shame society by being a good citizen forced into jail for doing what is manifestly the right thing.Bookwormhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12692907969177893526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7871003.post-1114818459398112782005-04-29T18:47:00.000-05:002005-04-29T18:47:00.000-05:00I rather envy your jury duty time spent. I've lived in Orange County, California most of my life and I've been registered to vote for 23 consecutive years, but I've only been called for jury duty once. Even then, I didn't have to go to a courthouse, but simply needed to check in by phone about three times to see if I needed to show up. I recently just got my second summons, but will out of state during the time stated. It's very strange, I have acquaintences who have been summoned multiple times. How come some people constantly get selected and others don't? Can't fiture it out.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
