Brief Political Aside

I have not followed the Wehner-Sullivan cage match with any diligence, but one point in this Wehner broadside strikes me as obviously incorrect. Wehner writes:

For Andrew, almost everything comes back to the Bush Administration’s policies on interrogation and water-boarding, Guantanamo Bay, rendition, and whether the Geneva Conventions ought to apply to non-state actors and terrorists.

For Sullivan, everything comes back to Bush's fleeting, half-hearted endorsement of the Defense of Marriage amendment.

Ah, takes me back to the bygone days of 2005.

"But in my darker moments, I wonder whether the war wasn't a cover to persuade good, open-minded folk like Glenn [Reynolds!] to enable the theocratic impulses of the Republican base."

Andrew Sullivan: the Iraq War was ginned up by the administration as a pretext to ban gay marriage, which was never legal anyway, but let's not get lost in the details.

I forgot how to embed links, but here it is:

For Sullivan, EVERYTHING comes down to being gay. His doesn't want fairness; he wants validation.

I think all of these comments give Sullivan way too much credit as an honest pundit who recently took a left turn but has conservative impulses. Sullivan is David Brock, only slightly less despicable. He was never a conservative. He has always been about promoting himself, which for many years included carving out a niche for himself as the gay conservative. This dates back to his time in Oxford, probably when he realized that gays were uniformly liberal and the best way to make a name for himself would be to be a gay conservative/libertarian. But he's never been a conservative, ever. At best he can claim to be a fiscal conservative, but even that is nonsense as he now backs someone who is very much in favor of mass redistribution of American wealth. His opinions on drug use are libertarian, but unlike libertarians, Sullivan actively uses drugs and encourages others to do so, not unlikely leftist hippies. He's a conservative of doubt, which means absolutely nothing, and all his opinions now closely mirror standard american liberal policies. Fuck him.
