Joe Francis and the L.A. Times

The next time someone complains about what a terrible paper the Los Angeles Times is, send them this unbelievable Claire Hoffman profile of Girls Gone Wild creator Joe Francis. In terms of writerly and reportorial degree of difficulty, this is the hardest-to-execute piece I've read in a very long time.

You know what? You're sassy and I love it--give her a T-shirt.

Who gives a shit about how it was written? The point is that Joe Francis is a violent rapist asshole.

Yeah, sure it's well- written. But, seriously, WTF?! The guy physically assaults her in front of the cops and she's soooooo concerned with getting the story that she lets him get away with it? I swear to God that 95% of all women, including my wife, are out of their GD minds. No wonder so many of them are willing to flash their ta- tas for Francis.

Hmmmm. A guy who objectifies women and induces them to perform depraved sexual acts for nothing more than a T- shirt is also inclined to engage in date rape.

What's next for this intrepid reporter? Perhaps a story on how holding your head under water for over an hour causes drowning?

Agreed with 9:22 post. My mom and sister are smarter than me, but they are fricking nuts.

And the women allow themselves to be treated as objects - Joe Francis just capitalizes on it. Last time I checked, they took off their shirts on their own accord.

I would agree with her that the story is more important than her specific experience. A lot of people don't know what they're buying with GGW. I think his life as a criminal with enough money to get away with it is very closely tied to this specific product. Most of the time, we can't be held responsible for how vendors spend what was once our money, but clearly he's using GGW as a vehicle for him to perpetrate his crimes and otherwise lascivious misogynistic activities.

I don't like GGW anyway, but if there was a group of "sex positive*" feminists running GGW, and more importantly, not raping anyone, I wouldn't feel the need to complain about it. But that is not the case, and I am complaining about it.

* This term is insulting to anyone else who would ever have sex and thus it gets the quotation marks, and a groan; I use it only to show I recognize some people go into pornography with very different attitudes from Joe Francis.
