In the early '90s, when soda companies were doing the most ridiculous things--remember clear cola?--Pepsi tested a coffee-flavored cola called Pepsi Kona. No one in America liked it. Except for me. Until just a few months ago, I kept a couple 2-litre bottles of the stuffed stashed in the garage for a special occassion. Turns out, soda doesn't age they way one might hope.
But never fear, because this week there will be Coca-Cola BlaK.

If I were Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts, I'd be shitting my pants that K was invading my turf.
Not "will" "is." I've had the stuff. It's not bad, but the price ($1.50) is too much for a little bottle of coffee-flavored Coke.
I thought nobody liked it but me, too. I long lamented Pepsi Kona's demise, but nobody seemed to remember it but me, which I thought was odd...even if it flopped, more people should still be able to recall its existence, no?
Until I read on the Wikipedia page that it "was market tested in the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania areas between 1994 and 1996."
I'm a NYC transplant from a suburb of Philly, but none of my current friends are. So, I sip Coke's rip-off and lament Pepsi Kona alone.
I loved Pepsi Kona. I kept some cans of it for years, but no it didn't keep well.
Heck, I still have two of their tshirts, a bit worn. Maybe we should send emails to pepsi hq. Maybe do another market test.
Was the only pepsi i actually liked. i'm a coke drinker but i dont like the black
Got some in 1993 at a baseball game. Drank part of one (not enjoyable) and kept the other in the fridge until 2004. Would have sold it, but the can was not holding up well.
Ugh
yup! i loved P-Kona as well!! I think they tested it in the wrong market- lehigh??
they should have tested it in ny where freaks like me woulda kept it going having it on break instead of coffee! yeah!................ and i still have a can of it in my fridge! and will soon be selling it on ebay seeing that crystal clear pepsi is going for $30 a 16 oz bottle... cha-ching!!
I loved Pepsi Kona, and I am NOT a Pepsi drinker. It's the only Pepsi product I liked. I, too, got strange looks every time I brought up the product amongst friends. I had it at the Jersey shore during the summer of '96. It was awesome!!
I too thought I was one of the few who loved it or even remembered it. I grew up outside of Philly and had it when I was about 14 or 15...it was one of my first coffee tastes that I liked. I miss Pepsi Kona.... :(
How this never took off yet people will pay 5 bucks for a large, oops, venti, will never cease to amaze me. And, yes, soda does not keep very well! I got rid of a two liter bottle I had until last year(09). But I still do have an unopened can that I plan on throwing at the person who pulled the plug on the production of it! Good for them I'm very lazy and never follow through with things!
