Well, well, well. Who would have guessed the Washington Redskins would be headed to the playoffs this year? Unfortunately not I, who predicted a more dismal 7-9 season. Oh me of little faith. And that's what it came down to, didn't it? Gibbs having faith in a 35-year-old QB who many (including myself) believed was all washed up. Faith in a trade of Laveranues Coles for Santana Moss. Faith in a trade of Champ Bailey for Clinton Portis. And in the end, it all worked out. Even without LaVar Arrington, right?
The Post's Mike Wise thinks it's the other way around: "Most people in the organization believe they learned to win without Arrington. They have no idea that they won in spite of how they treated him." And how they treated him is indeed a travesty.
Another travesty was the so-called bet between Washington and Philadelphia. Since Washington won, we get the free cheesesteaks. But had Philly been victorious, we were supposed to offer up that great Washington classic. The ... crabcake?

Glad you're happy with Portis, we're very happy with Champ. Redskins are first round fodder. Love Gibbs though.

FREE LAVAR!
Chump Bailey? lots of interceptions, but gives up lots of long TDs. We'll take Springs and Portis over Chump any day. How many playoff games has Shanny won without Elway? oh yeah, none. that should remain the same again this year.
Crabcakes would have made sense, what with them being a local delicacy hereabouts. But no, what the mayor actually bet his Philly counterpart was chili dogs. No matter how locally beloved the U Street dog shop they were to come from, chili dogs are generic food with just as much local character as a box of Kraft mac and cheese or a six-pack of Bud.
Raises the question, though: If we put crabcakes off the table as more of a Baltimore thing, then what is the DC food we can put up against other local dishes like cheesesteaks and Billy Goat burgers and barbecue ribs for civic bets like this? Maryland has the crab. Virginia has the best cured ham in North America. DC has, what, bean soup?
(Personally, when I'm away from DC for too long, what I really get to craving is a plate of terlingua red chili mac, four way, from the Hard Times in Old Town, but that hardly qualifies as local fare.)
Yo anom,
you must be watching different film than me and I love the way you discount Champ's interceptions. Guess the Skins don't need someone with 8 picks, several ran back too.
Takes a while bud to make up for an Elway. In the AFC, the Skins are a last place team. In the NFC, the Broncos would be the best.
And if you're happy with the crybaby Portis, wait until he starts whining. Shanahan does't put up with crybabies and talking shit to the press. Good riddance.

Who would have guessed it? I'd say quite a few of us did...right here in this very comment section back on April 13th...
Duane:
I was the anon who posted the iggles would lose to the skins twice. As for Chump Bailey: go check out the stats, last year no CB was burned for more 30+ yard TDs than Bailey in all the NFL. He also held that distinction the year before that in Washington. He's a great player, but he gets burned several times a year in key games. The trade worked out for the Broncos mostly because they got the pick for Tatum Bell, which made it a better deal for you guys. But here's the kicker: Champ was leaving DC no matter what, that we were able to get anything for him means we were lucky. That we got a guy like Portis is awesome because the guy is a stud.
Next year, if you lose the bet, I'd suggest sending Philly a nice barrel of pork.
How about we change the bet and send Philly Marion Barry if they lose?
Montgomery Donuts used to be the food all my out of town family would demand when they came to DC. Best Donuts ever! Too bad a blizzard destroyed the Montgomery Donuts factory several years back, right as they were getting to get back into the business after shrinking their operations for the previous 5 or so years.
"How about we change the bet and send Philly Marion Barry if they lose?"
If youse guys dont mind taking John Street I'd make that trade.
