Cancer Blog

With an eye for detail and mordant wit, as they call it, this guy's been keeping a semi-regular diary of his struggle and how bad it feels to be alive. Rather moving. subtext

I don't know anything else about him and have come upon his blog entirely by chance.

I'm not so sure about this kind of thing. What I'm not sure about is when writing about your illness or pain, dwelling on it in public, simply becomes narcissistic exhibitionism. I've known writers who have written about their bouts of MS, open heart surgery, and chronic fatigue syndrome... and usually I'm afraid that there's something a bit indecent about such pieces. Theophile Gautier's memoir of dying from advanced syphilis has now been reprinted, for those of you with a taste for such accounts.
