Ricky Jay

How often does one buy tickets to see a magic show? More specifically, how often does one pay to see card tricks? Rarely, I am guessing. But for those of you in the Washington, DC, area, there is one show you will definitely not want to miss: The one, the only, Ricky Jay, card artist extraordinaire and sometime actor, will be performing at the Studio Theatre between now and May 22. Directed by David Mamet, the Obie Award-winning show is entitled appropriately enough, "Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants." (More information can be found on Ricky Jay's intriguing website.)

I was hyping this show to my brother and some Washingtonian friends as soon as I saw the Post article last night.

Mametian superfluous vulgarity aside, the following quote delivered by his character in Heist (2001) could just as easily apply to Ricky Jay himself:

JIMMY: So, this Joe, is he cool?
PINKY: My motherfucker is so cool, when he goes to bed, sheep count him.

Although I'm still not sure why he was cast as an Indian guy ("Mr. Gupta") as sidekick to Jonathan "Infinti" Price's Murdochian "billionaire tyrant" in the Bond flick they had to cut Teri Hatcher mostly out of.

Still, how can you not love a guy who could slash your carotid artery from twenty feet away with a three of clubs?
