Europe's Ticking Time Bomb

This anecdote from the Brussels Journal is terrifying:
My landlady in Strasbourg and I were watching French news this morning. The story about the Iranian President’s oh so predictable comments about Israel was being shown. She turned to me and said,

You know I was taking my daughter to school the other day and I noticed the driver was North African, to pass the time of day I asked him if he was observing Ramadan.

“Yes” he said,

“How long does it go on for?”, I asked

“About 40 days.”

“That must be tough. I guess you might wish you were Jewish at least their fast is only for one day?”

“Jews are not human, he replied.

“You know”, she said to me, “he was a young man, born here in Strasbourg, the home of France’s oldest settled Jewish community, I worry for my children.”

Then there's this case of jihad against a Danish newspaper, for daring to draw cartoons depicting Muhammad:
The Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten is being protected by security guards and several cartoonists have gone into hiding after the newspaper published a series of twelve cartoons (view them here) about the prophet Muhammad. According to the Islam it is blasphemous to make images of the prophet. Muslim fundamentalists have threatened to bomb the paper’s offices and kill the cartoonists. . . .

The publication led to outrage among the Muslim immigrants living in Denmark. 5,000 of them took to the streets to protest. Muslim organisations have demanded an apology, but Juste rejects this idea: “We live in a democracy. That’s why we can use all the journalistic methods we want to. Satire is accepted in this country, and you can make caricatures,” he said. The Danish imam Raed Hlayhel reacted with the statement: “This type of democracy is worthless for Muslims. Muslims will never accept this kind of humiliation. The article has insulted every Muslim in the world.” . . .

The affair, however, has also led to a diplomatic incident. On Thursday the ambassadors of eleven Muslim countries, including Indonesia, a number of Arab states, Pakistan, Iran, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, complained about the cartoons in a letter to Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen. They say the publication of the cartoons is a “provocation” and demand apologies from the newspaper.

Jyllands-Posten was also included on an al-Qaeda website listing possible terrorist targets. An organisation which calls itself “The Glorious Brigades in Northern Europe” is circulating pictures on the internet which show bombs exploding over pictures of the newspaper and blood flowing over the national flag of Denmark. “The Mujahedeen have numerous targets in Denmark – very soon you all will regret this,” the website says.

Ah yes, the Religion of Peace.

to 8:50, "word".

Sometimes it seems like Islam is merely a series of rules so obscure and stringently designed as to purposely induce violation of them in order to provide an excuse for violence and retaliation. images of pigs, contact with the koran, images of the Prophet, presence of women etc... It's like being cornered by a guy who says he doesn't want to fight, but if you so much as move he is going to take that as a sign that you want to fight. "That's the way he wants it, that's the way he gets it. i don't like it any more than you men do." Strother Martin, Cool hand luke

They go to HEAVEN with 72 VIRGINS if they die as martyrs! AND they do believe that. Of course they're looking for any excuse to legitimize a violent death. Doesn't everyone get that yet? I would expect to see some "mysterious" explosions and destruction of some kind at the Iranian nuclear sites very shortly. If the U.N. doesn't do it (ha ha, that was just a joke), and we don't do it, then I guarantee the Israelis will find a way to do it.

These things are horrifying, and I don't want to make light of them. And without question, the burden of assimilating into a new culture falls on the immigrant, who chose to join it, after all. If you don't like Western civilization, by all means, take the next plane home. And I don't even want to address the guy who said that Jews aren't people -- that is too disgusting a viewpoint to even consider rationalizing.

But I also think it's worth remembering that some of the conflicts you have been cataloging (images of Mohammed, piggy banks) can be chalked up largely to severe culture shock.

Imagine if some decent, small-town Midwestern, Focus on the Family types moved to a new town for a job, and as they strolled out for a nice dinner with their kids on Friday night, suddenly found themselves on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. You could hardly blame them for thinking that all these people are going to hell in a handbasket and being mortally offended by it all, even though the Mardi Gras revelers are just doing what they've always done.

In an Islamic country, no one would even think of having piggy banks or images of Mohammed -- it completely violates their cultural norms. Then they come to a Western country to try and find a job and support their family, and they are surrounded by evils that would be unspeakable back home. Of course they're shocked.

Having said that, as I mentioned before, it's their responsibility to get over it, since they are the ones coming to a new country. And I expect they will -- eventually. If you've never studied the ugly history of large new immigrant groups (Irish, Italian, Eastern European, Chinese, Japanese) trying to assimilate into American culture, you really should. "Wop" and "polack" may not sound all that nasty to modern ears, but the often-vicious conflicts that arose as those groups tried to integrate (or not) into American society were all too real at the time.

Interesting observation. I wonder how much this parallels the success of radical communists and anarchists in recruiting among American immigrant populations in the early 20th century?

At the time, communism was certainly at least as dangerous an ideology as Islamic radicalism is today.

In any case, I suspect the same basic principles apply in opposing Islamic radicalism: by all means, attack the ideology and it's practitioners, but don't broaden it into an attack on the broader ethnic community.

I've spent the past week hammering on the damage done by multiculturalism, both to the dominant culture that's beating a retreat, and to the upcoming culture that's flexing its muscles. I found your post just one more sign of this cultural decay, and updated my latest post on the subject to link to this story. Thanks.

What I think everyone forgets is that the people growing up in muslim countries have NO CHOICE! You either believe OR YOU DIE! No one questions anymore. It has been bread out of the human race in their culture. For over 1000 years, you are born muslim, you do what you are told, you do not question, you are allowed to live! You question islam, you are branded an apostate, YOU DIE! You change religions, become a Buddist, you are an apostate, YOU DIE! Each and every muslim MUST defend the faith WITHOUT QUESTION!

The most interesting part of islam is how it grew ONLY through war, murder and rape. A muslim will NEVER admit that Mohammed raped any women because all the women he raped were his slaves and you cannot rape a slave! The stories of how Mohammed would kill a husband and then "have" the dead mans wife are historical fact. The only way to avoid slavery was to be a muslim, so guess what, the ancestors of the current muslims converted! They stayed alive!

When muslims come to the western world they NEED TO BE TAUGHT what it is to live in this FIRST World. They need to have islam DESENSITIZATION training so that when they hear islam dispaired, they understand that this is a free society thing and they are NOT allowed to go out and kill people the way they were trained to do in the culture they came from.

I am against with my whole heart and entire being against ISlam and its helish slace culture. My dream is one day all hopeless lunatics will be wiped out by US and Europe and the kids that are left, brought up as normal human being never even hearing the word Islam. There are no words to express how detastable ISlam is to me. And let you tell you what Islam is,, it is not about God (alah) not about faith or devotion,, it is about lies, manipulation, control, sadism and slavery. Poor human beings who follow ISlam are selfves, brain washed zombies, who are lied to and decived by the devil himself. I hope God will torture Muhamed and many others in hell who promotes Islam. GOD HELP US ALL< deliver us from the plague and EVIL Islam,

Amen to the no-apology post--give these folks a lesson in democracy. Incomprehensibly ridiculous. How many times have they burned a flag or hung somebody in effigy? What goes around, comes around--simple fact of life that somehow must get obscured when you lead a hopless, lie of a life with no chance of redemption, salvation, or peace.
