I cackled when I read that, I'm such a eurocentrist, it's truly embarrassing.
Personally, I think it would be impossible for Middle Eastern culture to really "westernize" whereas it's a virtual certainty that the middle east will modernize. It's easy to say from where I'm standing, though.
A lot of living in the West is an experience relevant to modernity, but a lot of our life is Western. It's not the only way to experience modern technologies and a modern economy. Just look at how culturally different the United States and Japan are. Obviously there is culture diffusion, but it's not overwhelming.
No matter how good it gets over there, if you visit the place, you'll still know instantly that you're not in Kansas.
