I reviewed Edward Jay Epstein's The Big Picture last week and wanted to plug the book again. If you are interested in the movie industry, The Big Picture is absolutely essential reading. It's Hollywood's Moneyball.
Also, check out Epstein's excellent site and blog.

Thanks for the review. I learned quite a bit about the movie industry and I haven't even read the book yet. What intrigues me most is the way the industry reports profit so as to minimize the payments due actors. It seems similar to what goes on in the music industry where even platinum-album artists may be flat broke.
Sadly, good movies seem to be fewer and farther between every year. The "popcorn industry" seems a likely candidate for a reason why. Having once been a teenage girl not so many years ago, I recall that the motivations for seeing a movie did not always have anything to do with the quality of the film!
